Dear Lactnet Friends:

I used to feel that the scales were unnecessary, that if a baby had weight
gain issues the pediatrician would be monitoring.

Nowadays,  I have learned the scale is just one more tool at my disposal,
like my neonatal stethoscope, and the occasional nipple shield: never used
routinely, and there if I need it. When a baby looks great and the mother
feels no pain, it is always useful to discover that the baby has transferred
only a few grams of milk.

My scale is not heavy.  My bag of papers and aides is heavier. There are
always carts with wheels if folks don't want to carry things.
