I agree with Pat Gima and Patricia Drazin. I've been using Rescue Remedy for
quite some time both personally and professionally. I explain it to moms as
"alternative therapy" kind of like homeopathic relaxation meds. I can't use it
in the hospital but I sure to suggest it when they call from home. I direct
them to the Bach Flower Essence website for a clear explanation. I also endorse
the use of cabbage and cool compresses. Many times these women have been using
warmth 'because that's what the books say to do" or the nurses said to do.
What other swollen body parts do we put heat on -- none! I've also beenusing
breast shells to maintain some pressure on the areola to cause leakage between
feedings; only use them briefly and I tell that to mom. "this will only need to
be done until the firmness goes away." For those who have trouble pumping,
doing this for a couple of hours helps.
I've also had patients who needed to use diuretics for several days. The La
Leche League tear sheet on Engorgement is one of the best collections of ideas
for treatment and there is an article on the LLLI website that covers the same
information.
