Infants usually don't start "complaining" about unpleasant feeding
experiences until they are between 6 and 12 weeks old. This is when
muscle tone starts to change (flexor tone starts to wane as extensor
tone increases) and when sucking starts to become more volitional and
less reflexive.

I have noticed that babies with restricted frenula often have very
strong gag reflexes. My hypothesis is that the tongue cannot elevate to
the palate, so the palate is naive to touch, and hypersensitive. Do you
have a doctor who would assess the tight frenulum and treat it to help
the baby's ability to groove the tongue and handle the milk flow while
you work on ramping down mom's supply?
