Dear Lori, first you have to look at a month prior to start of classes to
know what your rate was then. Then I think March 98 (this is 6 mo after
start of prenatal classes) would be good and then 6 mo after May 98 (start
of calls). Counting BFers on day one will give you the initiator rate.
Counting BFers at dischg. will let you get an idea about how info and
assistance of staff might be influencing what happens over the first two
days. In other words if dischg is as good as day one, your staff is
enabling moms to BF. If your rate at dischg is a significant drop, what is
going on to cause the drop? Looking at day one initiators vs dischg (and
fully BF at dischg + partially BF at dischg) would be an excellent
exercise for any maternity dept to assess what is actually going on on the
ward! Oh I wish there was such a job of just doing research! Oh well off
to the daily grind (which I love). Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
