<when you have a child with colic, everything in your body and mind
screams
to solve the problem. the stress on the mother, in particular, is
amazing
and IMHO intentional / purposeful. who else will hunt doggedly to stop
this
child's pain?>

Dear Rachel,

I couldn't agree with you mare about everything in a mother's body and
mind screaming to her to find the cause of her poor baby's screaming.
Fortunately, however, even though her baby's cries certainly sound like
cries of pain they rarely are. Most colicky babies are like smoke
alarms, they let out the same pain-sounding cry regardless of what is
upsetting them. (Which is why things that couldn't possibly lessen pain
like car rides, hair driers, and swaddling can be so effective at
calming them.)

The vast majority of colicky babies are just having a hard time staying
settled without the help of the calming sensations of the uterus to turn
on their "calming reflex".

Only about 15% of babies with colic (unexplained fussing/crying for more
than 3 hours a day) have pain as a cause of their crying (~13% from food
sensitivity and ~2% from GE Reflux Disease).

Harvey
