Magda brings up a good point. I find being scientific in my approach to
helping mothers with difficult breastfeeding problems helpful, while
valuing both the process and product aspects of breastfeeding. I don't
think there needs to be a dichotomy, these two important aspects of
breastfeeding do coexist. Lactation consultants are the modern
manifestation of woman to woman help with childbearing and rearing that
has existed in most communities throughout time. I agree that we need to
avoid adopting a strictly product, paternalistic model, and I think that
most of us are successful in that. We face the challenge of bringing a
more holistic model of breastfeeding to the wider culture and to health
systems. Perhaps we can dialogue on ways to do this.

My own work on sensory integration is evolving to honor the process of
breastfeeding and sensitive, responsive parenting. As I delve more into
the current neuroscience research, I find more and more evidence that
the process is important neurologically and developmentally (something
we all here already know). Perhaps we can use this knowledge as one
entry piont to restoring value to the process as well as the product.
