Barbara and Gretchen,

As a lay breastfeeding advocate I did find that auction somewhat offensive.
I don't at all mind someone selling a new pump on an auction site, as I
posted earlier this is how I bought my pump. However, I didn't buy it from
that person. The sole fact of her proclaiming to be a Lactation Specialist
without being an IBCLC sits wrong with me. I don't know that I will ever
end up with an IBCLC, but I could. I do help a lot of women with
breastfeeding but never would I proclaim myself to be a specialist. I, too,
worked in a level III NICU and have vast experience with neonates but that
does not in any way make me a specialist in lactation. I do think that new,
affordable, high quality pumps should be available for sale but representing
oneself as an expert while clearly just trying to make a sale really
doesn't sit well with me.

Frankly, I'm surprised nobody commented on the listing of telephone
consultations I mentioned earlier. Am I the only one who finds this
auctioning of professional health services offensive? Maybe I'm being too
 sensitive. . . . >>
The individual hawking her services did not mention that she was IBCLC
anywhere I could see on her site. Seems a case of yet another
self-proclaimed "expert" manipulating the system to make a profit. And no,
I
don't think you are being overly sensitive, Barbara - Lactation Consulting
has
to be a calling and I guess I'm overly suspicious or jealous of anybody who
is able to really make a decent living as just that!
