Teresa, as a lay counselor, I have been in an opposite situation, which may
be parallel to what sometimes goes on in a hospital.

Last year, for example, a mom one week pp had horrible nipple pain. I was
able to make what you might call "gross adjustments" in latch -- getting the
baby more turned to mom, etc -- and relieve the pain. But when, another week
later, it became clear that the baby wasn't gaining and I suggested that she
should see a professional who could help with latch better than I had been
able to, to be sure the baby was set up to transfer milk well, she wasn't
interested -- "You fixed the positioning already, that can't be the problem!"

I think that when we emphasize the basic and fundamental importance of
positioning that gets read sometimes as "simplicity" -- so anybody can do it,
right? And anybody with a slight clue must be giving me all the advice I
need, right? Why would I pay consultant's fees for that kind of easy stuff?

[That mom weaned, too -- she couldn't believe there was an easy answer to her
problems, and didn't care to look for a harder one. :( ]
