Hello wonderful, helpful Lactnetters,

About 1 wk ago, I wrote about "baby #3-Cute little boy who was 8 lb at birth, gained well enough by 2 months of age. Now at 4 months he is only 10 lb 7 oz. . . sucking for a few minutes at breast then tugging & pulling at nipple before releasing & not wanting to continue nursing." This mom has again given me permission to write about her situation.

Mother increased breastfeeding & pumping. Baby had gained 4 oz when she returned to dr in 1 wk. She recently started taking reglan & is getting more milk when pumping. She thinks baby is getting more milk at breast also. I developed a series of questions for her to answer based on all the information that I received from the lactnetters who replied to my initial inquiry. Just by answering these, she was able to see the most likely scenario that caused the problem. She had taken a decongestant for several days before changing to a medication compatible with breastfeeding; she was very busy with her other 2 children; baby was sucking pacifier & his fingers frequently; she figured he did not need to eat as frequently by 3-4 mos. - this was a relief since she is a busy homemaker & mom; she thought he was just lean & long like her first son; no regular doctor visit/weight check between 2 & 4 months of age. She wants to come in for pre & post feeding wts this week to check her progress.

Thanks so much,
Laura Hart
