It looks like we have been greeted with more research which will make moms
doubt their ability to provide optimal nutrition for their babies without
the benefit of the pharmeceutical industry.

Headline: Study Shows Supplementing with Martek DHA (TM) While
Breastfeeding Improves Psychomotor Skills in Toddlers
Thursday July 9, 9:31 ET

Study Adds to Growing Body of Research Showing Long-Term Benefit of Maternal
DHA Supplementation

Infants of mothers who supplemented with Martek DHA (TM) (docosahexaenoic
acid) while breastfeeding had improved psychomotor skills at 2 1/2 years of
age, according to a study published this month in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition....

...The study also confirmed that DHA supplementation while breastfeeding
effectively increases DHA levels in the mother's milk as well as in the
infant's blood. The moms supplemented with DHA had 75% more DHA in their
breast milk than the control group and their infants had 35% higher DHA
blood levels than the control group of infants..

It is interesting to me that the same journal reported in January 2003 that
supplementation with dietary flaxseed oil had NO EFFECT "on breast-milk,
plasma and erythrocyte DHA contents. (see
http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/77/1/226).

Also, I was unable to find the article referenced in the Yahoo business news
in the journal itself at http://www.ajcn.org/. It looks like it is in the
July issue which is not yet available.
