I call the recent news about antioxidants in breastmilk, laying the
groundwork/setting the scene for the selling of some products. Now what products
might they be? T. Hegyi has also been one of the researchers for clinical trials
on a drug that treats newborn jaundice called InfaCare Pharmaceuticals
Corporation. (strange name--I guess it would be just coincidence that this name is
the same name as InfaCare Infant Formula that just happens to have the latest
nutritional elements of beta carotene and selenium--aren't they considered
antioxidants?) InfaCare Pharmaceutical Corporations funded research on a drug
called Stanate for use in jaundice in newborns to prevent brain damage. This
drug supposedly resulted in lowered bilirubin levels, fewer uses of phototherapy,
and of course no adverse events. The Chairman and founder of InfaCare
Pharmaceutical, Dr. Vukovich once worked for Bristol Meyers as did another board
member, Digby Barrios. Digby Barrios has also been a past president and CEO of
Boehringer Ingelheim. (I do not know if there is a connection between this
pharmaceutical company and the infant formula by that name.)

So, in my opinion the scene is being set in order to sell infant formula
and/or drugs for newborn jaundice. Does evidence-based research exist in regard
to anything regarding infant feeding? I don't think so. What is the truth
when research is held in the palms of the infant formula and drug companies?
What is the truth when these mighty hands also hold patents on synthetically
derived human milk components? And what is the truth when some breastfeeding
advocates believe that the WHO Code is a personal moral code but not part of
professional ethics?
