A mother has chosen to ONLY breastpump with her babies. She did it with her
first one and has chosen this method with her second even with gentle
encouragement from staff and myself that direct breastfeeding is the best.
She had a great milk supply with her first baby pumping often 16+oz at each
session and c/o lots of leaking and engorgement if she spaced out the
pumpings. This time she was direct feeding in the hospital but her baby
didn't breastfeed well in the first 36 hours. She left direct feeding on day
4 and I thought she would continue but today she says she is pumping and
that is what she wants to do. Her supply is again very adequate but she is
happy she isn't leaking and feeling engored. She feels her leaking and
engorgement the first time was from over stimulating. She is only 8 days
from delivery and has chosen to pump 4 times a day-she gets 64oz. Baby takes
24oz. Here's the question-Will her supply suffer later in the course of
lactation because of not activating all the alveoli? Mary Ann Krainz RN,
IBCLC
