Definitely inform, make aware, seek approval, prepare, as with any patient
care activity I would perform as their nurse. An observed hesitency warrants a
different approach. And, as is often appropriate, I assess interest/seek
approval:  "would you like to practice while I'm here?". It's amazing how
eager most new mothers are to learn in spite of many challenging and non-
condusive situations in early postpartum.

This line works well: "Let me hold the baby for you while you get your pillows
situated".
