Can't believe that Hale doesn't have all of the ARV drugs listed, but you
seem to be right. Perhaps it is not seen as too much of an issue, since
rich mothers are "not allowed" to breastfeed if they have HIV and poor
mothers can't afford the drugs. Not the reality of course.

Are you sure that the "pump and dump" instruction was not till the mother is
declared HIV free, rather than for the drugs themselves? I bet that both
drugs, AZT for sure, have been provided to infants, so why the concern for
the drug passing through breast milk, if it does?

I had a colleague with a needle-stick injury and she found the drugs so
toxic to her system that she came off voluntarily, having assessed for
herself the unlikelihood of her patient being HIV infected. It had been a
knee-jerk reaction: "Ooh, needle-stick. Must have ARVs." Were any sort of
tests done on the patient(s) your mother had? Seems to be far more
sensible a first step than to be going through what she and her baby are
going through now. I feel so sad for her. Yet another victim of HIV
paranoia.
