Lynette: Your teaching method is the subject of a research article done by
a group of midwives a few years ago - they call it H.O.T. (Hands Off
Technique). They found that if women were verbally instructed prenatally
in position and latch and allowed to practice with a doll or teddy bear.
the moms learned to nurse more easily in the first days and the duration of
breastfeeding was found to be longer in women who learned by the Hands Off
method. After all, the mother and her baby need to practice and learn, not
the doctor, nurse, LC, etc. and the only way to learn is by Hands ON (the
mother's hands on the baby and her own breast)!
I believe I mentioned this article in a previous post awhile back, so for
those interested in it, do an archives search. I don't have the article at
my fingertips just now.
I myself have always taught using this method, as I've always felt that it
is the mother's responsibility to nurse the baby, not mine. After all, she
doesn't take me home with her! And this method has served me well for 25
years.
