Hello from cloudy Florida waiting on some of the rain to come...I know those
in the North are tired of the snow, just sent home daughter and granddaughter
from a visit.
This is referring to Listeria patients and breastfeeding. The Mom who I
referred to in last posting was a patient 5 years ago and she didn't breastfeed
due high maternal temp of 105-106 degrees and all the high antibotics she was on
for such a long time.
We actually feared we would loose both her and her baby. She was ill for
quite a few weeks. After Hurricane Andrew we also had 3 moms in the area who
had it as well and one baby did die and no one breastfed due to severity of
their illnesses. All babies were in NICU for ages.
The neos and Infectious Disease people docs and nurses all stated that
breastfeeding should be abandoned. Perhaps in a different place and time, now they
might encourage pump and dump, but they felt that pump and dump would not be a
good way to control the organism. I would be interested to know if anyone has
had a recent outbreak and how it was managed.
Sincerely,
Leanne Jewell, RNC, IBCLC, LCCE, FACCE
