I've had a question come up about the Mirena IUD and breastfeeding--I just
talked to a mom who wants to have one inserted 6 weeks postpartum but is
worried about supply issues. She has breastfed successfully before, with no
supply problems, but not while using hormonal contraception. The archives
have a couple of anecdotal comments about Mirena, but not many. Hale lists
it as L2 and suggests that the mechanism of its' delivery mechanism and
dosage indicates it will probably have less of an impact than Depo-Provera.
Anecdotally, it seems some moms have supply problems after getting
Depo-Provera, but oftentimes they get it sooner than the 6 weeks postpartum
wait that the BAB suggests for progestin containing contraceptives. (and
ask for help after the fact unfortunately). I'd appreciate any help you can
provide.
