Thanks to everyone who replied and asked follow-up questions. Lactnet is an
incredible resource. I am in the midst of moving back to Singapore and many
of my reference texts are packed away - so having internet support at this
time has been so valuable. Also, it really helped to read not just the
factual information and references, but also to have the reassurances that
we were on the right track. I have felt so frustrated at times because of
my limited role it helping her get the correct treatment - so it was good to
read that I was justified in feeling so. I know I have overstepped my
Leader role on a few occasions, by strongly "suggesting" certain courses of
action to her - and I was hoping that I was making the right call.

I did help her check out other possible sources of pain, such as Reynaud's,
allergy, oversupply, latch, and bacterial infection. One test did come back
with traces of e.coli in the breastmilk, but no other bacteria was found,
and the follow up tests showed milk and blood were clear for e.coli. Dr
wanted to do a round of antibiotics "just in case", and that's when I
suggested a round of Diflucan instead. Thankfully I am dealing with a very
caring and open-minded doctor and an assertive and perseverant mum.

I just heard from the mum this morning and she is feeling that the pain is
now "totally bearable". There have been significant improvements over the
weekend. She is grateful for the additional references to bring to the
doctor, who is open to being educated on this subject. She plans to
continue Diflucan in the current dose (200mg) until she is pain free for a
week. She took the JHL article on long term use of Fluconazole to her GP
who extended her Rx, but with a request that she get her liver tested next
week. Not sure where this concern stems from, but mum said she would watch
for the signs of an "overburdened liver" and go for tests if the symptoms
warrant. She is quite confident that she will soon be pain free.

Anyway, thanks again for the long distance support.

Cheers,

Tanja Knutson
