I'm so glad Pam Morrison chimed in on her experience in a country where not
much fortification is going on and yet one sees reasonable to good outcomes
of the policy of feeding own-mother's milk to preemies. Obviously I support
the idea that banked donor milk is the next step (esp when the mother's
supply is low) I also second the idea that lactoengineering of own mother's
and donor milk makes more sense (from a safety angle) than experiments with
modified formulas. I continue to believe, based on what I see and what I
read, that these babies are especially vulnerable at hospt. discharge when
they transition home still small, still not at their due dates, with very
anxious parents. Better breastfeeding support during the first two weeks
home is critical to assure that the baby continues to get optimal caloric
intake.
