China jails five in deadly baby-milk scandal

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has jailed five people for up to eight years for
their roles in a fake
milk-powder scandal in which at least 13 babies died, the latest in a string
of officials and
merchants to be penalised.

A court in Fuyang in dirt-poor Anhui province jailed four merchants for four
to eight years for
selling fake formula to villages which led to the death of one baby and the
malnutrition of two, the
Beijing Youth Daily said on Friday.

Chi Changban, a milk-powder manufacturer from southeastern Zhejiang
province, was jailed
for seven years for producing and selling the formula.

Chi was the first manufacturer of the fake powder to be punished so far. All
five defendants
had appealed, the paper said.

At least 13 babies died and another 189 fell ill in the scandal in Anhui and
elsewhere last year.

Many of the victims were infants of poor farmers in the outlying areas
around Fuyang.
