In the USA, federal law protects unpaid breaks for pumping for employees
who are entitled to get time-and-a-time pay, after 40 hours a week of work
-- often called "hourly wage workers."

No matter what, CHECK the law in your STATE, as it may provide greater
protection than the federal law. Review this page at USBC to get started;
scroll ALLLLL the way to the bottom for the link to the National Conference
of State Legislatures page:  http://www.usbreastfeeding.org/p/cm/ld/fid=231

The federal law does NOT cover teachers, though efforts have been underway,
since the Affordable Care Act section offering pump breaks became law in
2010, to change this. Your client may have to use powers of persuasion and
diplomacy to arrange for time to pump, versus "demanding" their "right" to
do so. It sounds like the principal is willing to do that, however. There
are some excellent suggestions for helping nursing parents at work here:

Your absolute BEST resource to track what is happening on federal laws to
protect BFg advocacy (like the pump breaks law) is the U. S. Breastfeeding
Committee (USBC). You do NOT have to be a member organization to sign up
for their weekly newsletter, the Weekly Wire -- which is jam-packed every
week with links and tidbits about BFg laws, research and gran
opportunities, advocacy by state, tribal, and cultural affinity
coalitions. I urge anyone in the USA to sign up.
