Just today at the LLLI International Conference in San Francisco Audrey
Naylor MD asked the audience at her session entitled "Exclusive
Breastfeeding:Is It Possible?" for a show of hands of how long women
exclusively breastfed without introducing other foods. There was quite a
number of babies who didn't start solids for 10, 12 months or more. It
didn't seem to be a very shocking thing. Her Optimal Infant Feeding Plan
(OIF) states 1)Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months 2)Transitional foods
until two years of age and 3)Family foods after that. Breastfeeding should
continue for at least 12 months and thereafter as long as mutually
desired.Breastfeeding in other cultures continues until 2 and a half to
seven plus years and is physiologically and developmentally normal and
healthy. This is a GREAT conference. Sincerely, Laura
