Am writing to share an interesting case history and glean any wisdom you have to offer.
I just visited with a mom who delivered her 2nd baby today. Her RN told me she wasn't going to breastfeed b/c of her thyroid medication. This seemed surprising, so I stopped by to chat with her. Mom told me the medication is not her concern, that she is not going to breastfeed b/c she has "major hypothyroidism." She stated after her first child was born, whenever she would put the baby to breast, she would break out in a sweat, and sometimes pass out. She flew back and forth from her home here in Oregon to Michigan to see an endocrinologist, who told her that the breastfeeding had induced premature menopause (this seemed surprising to me in light of how easy it was to conceive a second child). She says it took 1.5 years for her thyroid levels to stabilize, with thyroid supplements. She is not willing to consider initiating bfdg after what she went thru last time. And I am not looking to change her mind, just interested in her case history and hoping to learn more from the list members.
Has anyone else ever encountered this type situation? I told the mom I would post and share what I get with her.
