Thanks to all who shared their thoughts on cutting the shield and about using
them in general. It was good to hear from Marie that most moms no longer use
it within 48-72 hours following her protocol. This is what my client is
doing, so hopefully she will be successful. Joy's experience is that it may
take up to a few weeks, though. I find that many mothers don't have the
stamina to last through weeks and weeks of trying everything to make it work,
but this client seems to have what it takes to get her through it. I know it
was difficult for me, a third time mother and LLL Leader, to get through the
weeks of sucking problems I experienced. I can readily see why mothers don't
make it. They need LOTS of frequent support, as well as determination. In
my personal case, there was no one to "blame" as it was just one of those
things that can happen, but with most everyone I see I find I can blame some
other professional or some other (mal) practice and it just drives me crazy
sometimes!

Regarding cutting:
I also had thought that it would leave hard edges, but once I had the shield
in my hand it felt so soft I didn't see how it could be sharp. I guess I
need to cut one myself. I am confused about what it says in Riordan and
Auerbach about cutting shields, then. The discussion is p 311-316 and
several times it says to cut, to allow more milk to flow to the baby. It is
discussing silicone shields. Can anyone enlighten me?
