...unless the mother has a serious over-supply. I have had a couple of
clients lately who were encouraged for their 10-12 ounce per pumping 8
times a day. The when baby goes to the breast she gets a tummy full of
fore milk and suffers until the supply reaches a one-baby-sized milk supply.

One of these mothers was so distraught by her baby's crying that she
stopped feeding at the breast (even though the baby learned a perfect latch
very quickly) and just bottle-fed. The other one worked to reduce her
supply and baby is now happily and calmly feeding at the breast. This
mother has noted the same "personality change" that was mentioned by others.

I do wish the word would get out to mothers of premies that pumping
excessive amounts milk is not of benefit to the baby. Most of the medical
support persons just cheer them on and exclaim about their vast stores in
the freezer.
