Last May I worked over several weeks with a first-time mother from Kosovo
whose baby was a bit jaundiced and very reluctant to take the breast after
being supplemented by bottle one time in hospital. She and her husband were
lucky to have their own room in a refugee senter, sharing bath and kitchen
with about 8 other units. Baby cried a lot, took ages to latch at each
feed, gained very slowly the first month, mother got mastitis and was really
wiped out. She also missed her own mother terribly, but was able to phone
her intermittently. This grandmother was a gold mine of support to her
daughter. Don't give formula, express your milk and give it by spoon or
eyedropper, don't give up, you can do it! In the midst of total chaos in
her own country she knew that her first grandchild needed real food. I
never learned what kind of professional background, if any, this woman had
but I was grateful that she was there, long distance, for her daughter in
what was already an unimaginably painful situation for them both.
And for those of you struggling with the first generation of breastfeeders
after the industrial milk anti-evolution, take heart. The next generation
will have knowledgeable grandmothers to help!
cheers
