There have been case reports of infants with no risk factors, such as spina
bifida, having severe latex allergy. The only known sensitization was to
latex bottle nipples and/or pacifiers.
Here's one: (scan down to bottom of article)

Respiratory Distress in Young Infant Caused by Latex Nipple
An article provides the first documented report of a very young infant,
brought to an emergency department for respiratory distress, found to be
experiencing an allergic reaction to a latex nipple. (Episodic Stridor With
Latex Nipple Use in a 2-Month-Old Infant)

I am one of those poor unfortunate souls who has developed an anaphylactic
reaction to even tiny amounts of latex. I would not have parents sensitize
their children for anything. I always recommend the use of silicon
instead, and remind parents to never let someone put a latex gloved finger
in their baby's mouth.

For more info on latex allergy, see http://latexallergylinks.tripod.com/.
Remember that approx. 10% of US health care workers are allergic to latex.
