Marsha: Since uterine fibroids tend to grow under the stimulation of
estrogen, they should stay the same size or may even get smaller during
breastfeeding, which is a low estrogen state. Although this is a pure
educated guess on my part, based on my understanding of the physiology
and not on any data or studies (I doubt there are any), there should be no
problem whatsoever. If any physician tells her that she should wean
because of fibroids, let him/her produce the research-based evidence for
that position. Hope this helps, Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC, who has heard
one too many stories of doctors giving mothers unfounded *medical* reasons
to wean.
