Pat responds to Carol,

I think this is an interesting concept that conference providers
need to take into consideration. We do it at needlework conferences -
classes are labeled : beginner, intermediate and advanced and there is an
explanation in the booklets telling you what the levels mean. They don't
want a beginner, who can't even cross a stitch in the advanced multi-stitch
sampler class! It's not fair to the beginner or the others in the class who
came to learn something more exotic than basic cross stitch!

Back at least 100 years ago when I was on the ILCA board, we did try this at
several ILCA conferences -- it was a total bust, despite the explanations on
the brochure as to what was what. I agree with Barbara Wilson Clay that having
good notes (powerpoint or outline) in the syllabus will help clarify when you
say something that can be misinterpreted. As a frequent conference and
program speaker myself, I too am surprised to hear that I said something that I
didn't know I had said.

It also happens in e-mail....and there we have the written word, not the
spoken. Something can be taken one way and it was actually meant in another way.

We need to be careful about "always" and "never" -- and I generally tell my
moms that if something she's been told relative to breastfeeding sounds like a
rule, it's probably wrong. That goes specifically for always and never.....or
completely throwing out something we've always held. We have to be careful
that what we say doesn't come across as the "new" breastfeeding dogma instead
of the old breastfeeding dogma.....
