I am convinced that a full night's sleep is not normal. Many people
argue with me about this, but I remain emotionally certain that waking
up at night is just like the family bed -- more people do it than we
realize, it is healthy, and it has been proven safe since time
immemorial.

Another argument against my viewpoint is from people who cite studies on
one's inability to operate heavy equipment safely for long periods of
time after little sleep. My response is not evidence-based. It is that
perhaps people weren't designed to operate heavy equipment for long
periods of time.

One person who doesn't argue with me is my husband. I don't know about
the cause and effect of it, but his people believed long, sound sleep
was unhealthy (no one would be aware of danger to the village if
everyone was asleep) and he hasn't much need for sleep. Lack of stress,
rest, peace, etc. yes, but not sleep. Sometimes I wonder if it is
because we are so emotionally stressed and not physically active that we
need to escape into a state of oblivion for so many hours.

This is not to say I'm not grumpy when awoken more than every couple of
hours. :-)
