Liz, I remember your question and I was going to answer you that I tell
moms it may take 6 wks. Which I was thinking would be a reasonable time
frame to see how her production would respond. But then I didn't answer
because I really dont' tell moms that, but I talk about what happened and
ways to turn it around. I would probably tell mom that she could see an
increase in a few days, but definitely by 2 wks. Then I would tell her
that in a good 6 wks she should definitely be fully breastfeeding. This is
provided that things are normal from a maternal and baby point of view, and
it was just a lack of frequent feeding and / or overuse of unnecessary
supplementation. And provided she was really pressing me for some time
frame. I really would not want to give her a definite time frame because I
really don't know and I would tell her that I didnt'. But I would emphasize
that if she does not undertake these measures, she will be weaned very soon,
so I would encourage her to do it because, even if she needs supplementation
in the interim, she will be a breastfeeding mom and her baby will be a bf
baby, which is all good.
