I run a free, weekly breastfeeding support group in a local prenatal Yoga studio. I have moms introduce themselves & give their baby's name, age & something on their mind about breastfeeding. I jot it down & use it to stimulate conversation, always throwing out the topic to the group first to discuss. It is definitely a mother-to-mother support group with me just acting as the facilitator & keeping things evidence-based ("no, blue Gatorade won't increase your milk supply.") I'm clear at the start, this is not meant as a one-on-one consult (although I have been known to do a latch check) & ask them to talk with me afterwards if they need further expert help. I do bring my scale & mothers weigh their own babies. They must first sign a waiver saying this does not take the place of a visit to their HCP. I believe that in this day of rampant perceived insufficient milk supply, a weekly weigh-in in the early months can be very reassuring. And if it isn't, they will be told how to get further help. I have had feedback from moms that they don't think they would have endured through the first few months without this group. Meeting with these moms and babes is the favorite part of my week and I learn something new every time!
