In South Africa for (many years already) C/S mothers are given NSAID meds
post C/S. The two drugs used are: Diclofenac(Voltaren) either by suppository
or 100mg injection every twelve hours. Voltaren is the mostly commonly used.
Indomethecin suppositories are sometimes used as an alternative.
(these drugs or similar are often used for major orthopaedic surgery too)

The pain relief from Voltaren cannot be compared to Tylenol or Motrin - it
is vastly superior. I personally have had 1 x C/S plus two other major
abdominal surgeries. On the first one I had pethidine. The next two they
used Voltaren. I would vote for the Voltaren any day especially after my
hyst it really does work.  Women given Voltaren report very positively about
their pain relief.

PCA morphine mothers are groggy and tired. They have a nurse disturbing them
every hour night and day to do obs and do not self-mobilise as fast as
mother who are given the Voltaren.


When it comes to the breastfeeding side of things I wonder if PCA is all
that great? Surely the morphine must transfer into the milk and because it
is continuous (even though the dose is low)what is the effect on the baby
and breastfeeding?
