       " radiopaque agents(except barium) are iodinated compounds uses to
visualize various organs during x-ray. cat scans and other radiological
procedures. These compounds are highly iodinated benzoic acid derivitives.
Although under usual circumstances, iodine produducts are contraindicated in
nursing mothers ( due to ion trapping in milk) these products are unique in
that they are extremely inert. According to the manufactures, less than
0.005% of the iodine is free. They are in essence pharacologically inert, not
metabolized, and are rapildly excreted by the kidney (80-90% within 24 hours)
They are known ot pass unchanged into human milk after IV administration.
They are not absorbed after oral administraion (<0.1% absorbtion) Although
most companies inserts suggest that infants be removed from the breast for 24
hours, no untoward effects have been reported with these products.

   barium is a contrast agent, maternal absorption is limited. there have
been no reported harmful effects. (Dr. hale p.45)

            I hope that Dr. Hale and the other pharmacologists will correct
me if this information is not accurate.

             Neither of these is mentioned in Briggs or the pham section of
