Tanners stages refer to a clasification of pubertal development. Breast and
pubic hair/genital development is measured this way.
In reference to the breast :
Tanner 1:  Prepubertal, no breast tissue
Tanner 2:   Appearance of breast bud
Tanner 3:   Enlargement of breast and areola
Tanner 4:   Nipple and areola for a mound atop underlying beast tissue
Tanner 5:  adult configuration with areola and breast having smooth
contour
