Hi Catherine and Robyn,
This is a counseling issue and the LC would need to be mostly listening to
the mother. There is no place for the LC to say what the mother "should" do.
Surely this is an overwhelming time for all. The LC would be there to answer
questions realistically, help mother work through various scenarios, and
maybe to help brainstorm about options. Whatever decision the mother comes
to needs to be supported, of course.
If the mother feels she just can't handle anything other than her own
treatment and recovery, then she will need to be helped to accept that
decision. If she feels she wants to continue to express to the best of her
ability and be helped to relactate to whatever extent after her treatment,
then she should be helped to do that. The mother might even decide to wean,
and months later ask about relactation, in which case, the LC would help her
with that.
Whatever way she goes, she will likely realize that this will be no easy
decision and either way, there will be sacrifices. This mother will need
alot of support, obviously. My heart goes out to this family.
