Yes, Karleen -- I have found that when I can explain what it going on with the baby or the breastfeeding, then moms feel relief. By knowing what is going on, rather than just thinking they don't have enough milk or baby doesn't like to breastfeed, moms feel empowered. Sometimes it is just teaching the mother to read and understand her baby's breastfeeding cues/language rather than misreading them and thinking it is something else. I may not be able to solve the problem (perhaps baby needs a SLP or OT assessment, for example) but at least I can guide them into finding help and managing their milk supply. Not all moms go to great lengths to save the breastfeeding but at least they know why and they stop blaming themselves.

This is exactly why I feel so strongly about telling moms the full story ("truth") of what is going on in their particular situations. Knowledge is power.
