Dear Lactnetters,

Has anyone had this situation? Mother of a three-month-old contacted me
seeking help with getting baby to exclusively breastfeed. The baby has
been getting bottles since hospital discharge, but now they are almost
exclusively EBM except for the occasional bottle or two. (It's
frustrating that they waited so long to call for help, but that's another
story.) Mother pumps approx. 4 ounces, 7 times/day, including midddle of
the night. She told me it takes her an hour to get that much milk double
pumping with a Medela Pump In Style, so I observed her. I saw her right
breast let down almost immediately, but her left breast did not let down
until about 12 minutes later. I recommended warm compresses and breast
massage before the pumping and breast compressions and visualizations
during the pumping, but mom reports no change.

I am continuing to work with her to get her baby to eat at the breast, but
in the meanwhile, I would like to help her pump more efficiently and
effectively. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Ellen Maughan, JD, IBCLC
