Doctor's diary: baby blues
(Filed: 20/05/2003)

It's not much fun being a baby these days, writes Dr James Le Fanu

Babies have a hard time of it nowadays. First, the experts from the
Ministry insist they should be breast fed for six months, which is
all very well were it not that mother's milk is scarcely very
appetising - it tastes like skimmed cow's milk fortified with several
teaspoonfuls of sugar.

To be sure, there is some variation of flavour, depending upon what
mum had for lunch. But, again, it scarcely seems fair to have to pass
a lot of wind just because she is on a healthy-eating kick and
consuming large quantities of flatus-inducing beans and lentils.
Given the choice - which, of course, they are not - most babies would
opt for the more diverse taste experience of solid food as early as
possible.
