"can't refer to an LC" from the hospital settings....why not? You know, if
we don't wake-up ourselves within our profession and realize that these moms
need all the help they can get, we're never going to proceed with a unique,
separate recognition as health care professionals. Believe me, any LC in
private practice is not making a profit off of the occasional referral from a
hospital-setting! We are in private practice because we love it! It
provides accessibility without barriers, it provides another means of contact
to moms in need, it is not to make a ton of money! Why can an LC refer a mom
to another health care provider such as an osteopath or CST, but not to
another LC? It doesn't make sense to me! We're just shooting ourselves in
the foot....we're the laughing stock! You know a mom who's requesting a home
visit that's not provided by the hospital folks, why don't we all embrace
this request and "sell" our profession by offering to her the resources
available instead of not being able to give it to her? Wouldn't mom be
impressed and grateful if all hospital LCs freely and willingly offered this
mom the opportunity for ongoing needed follow-up? The statement to a mom of
"well, guess what? We have a wonderful LC who has a private practice in our
community who can see you and help you to breastfeed your baby. She's
wonderful! Will it help if I call her for you and give her your name &
number so she can contact you to schedule an appointment?" To beans with
HIPPA, too....you think a federal agency is going to come after some LCs who
receive "implied verbal consent" for a phone call? I doubt it! We need to
strive to collaborate inside our own profession in order to gain recognition
around the world and amongst other health care professsionals. Just my 2
cents for what it's worth this AM!
