The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Grave's
Disease. This is an autoimmune disorder in which
thyroid stimulating antibodies are produced. If this
mother has Grave's, it is unlikely that she will
become euthyroid without treatment.
In Post-partum thyroiditis, on the other hand, the
thyroid dysfunction usually resolves spontaneously
within one year.
The two are easily distinguished by blood tests.
