I started my career in those days too. Moms also stayed for 3 to 5 days with
a vaginal delivery. I was in for 6 with my first daughter (vaginal breech
delivery, but I had a horrendous urinary track infection), and 5 with my
second (she was jaundiced & I could stay). With moms in the hospital for
such an incredibly short period of time, I recommend that all moms have
private rooms. I had a private room w/ Jill (my first) and opted for a
semi-private w/ Torrey (and a home birth w/ Tim). But 6 days of isolation
was too much. Now I'd welcome 2 days in a private room, since that's all the
moms get. More often than not, a mom is put in a room with someone that
doesn't even speak her language. Having only two days -- they need their
rest.

And more often than not, the same nurse doesn't even have the two moms in the
same room -- so they do their teaching (such as it is) in isolation anyway.
