A question for collective knowledge and experience of the group re: nipple
shield use and the prem infant post discharge. In our level 2 SCN there has
been a trend to increase use of nipple shields with prem neonates following
the distribution amongst staff of Kathryn Wood's article "Nipple Shields"
published by the Australian Lactation Resource Centre - number 19 July 2005.
The article is basically saying premature babies benefit from nipple shield
use with regard to volumes of milk obtained.
My concerns relate to lack of post discharge BF outcome measurement for prem
infants using shields. There is little research on this vulnerable group. We
do know shields reduce duration and success of breastfeeding in the term
neonate population.
Would you mind sharing your experiences and perceptions of transition to
breastfeeding without shield use post discharge in the premature infant?
