Our hospital has adopted a hospital-wide pre-surgical skin prep protocol to help prevent colonization by MRSA,VRE and Acinetobacter.

The prep comes in the form of packaged cloths impregnated with Chlorhexidane Gluconate as seen here : http://www.sageproducts.com/lit/Nose-to-Toes_21669.pdf

My concern is that our mothers are being instructed to wipe down their whole bodies including breasts prior to C/Section.
The skin prep remains active for at least 6 hours.

We are at the same time attempting to get the babies skin to skin in the recovery room after C/Section and breastfeeding if possible.

Our infection control nurse is looking into the matter but it has been 3 weeks and I haven't heard anything back from her yet.

Do any other LC's have this issue at their hospitals?

What have your facilities decided to do about this skin prep and nursing mothers?

Many thanks

Cathy Loughman RN IBCLC (returned to Lactnet after a loooon hiatus)
