I believe Diane's log and others like it are an essential part of our
data-gathering process.

When I worked with the UC Davis study with Jane Heinig and the other LCs,
we all had to agree to use the 24 hour clock and consider the baby's age by
this - if born at 1400 on June 5, then the baby was 24 hours old at 1400 on
June 6. It was using this method that the research analysts were then able
to identify that if mothers did not report appreciable changes in their
breasts at 72 hours after birth (3 in a scale of 1 - 5), babies began to
show signs of weight loss > 10%, signs of dehydration, etc. (The decision
as to what to do was then up to the LC who was making a home visit and
OBSERVING the breastfeeding - there was no hard and fast rule as to what to
do.)

If we don't keep records that are THAT SPECIFIC and we don't teach mothers
to keep records that are that clear, then we will be unable to develop
evaluation tools and strategies based on infant age. "Day 1" and "Day 2"
 is too unclear.
