Ilene,

One cite for that is Goodman and Stevenson, 1989, indicating a strong
inheritability for ADHD symptoms. ADHD is now considered a disorder
stemming from both biochemical malfunctions and
neurobiological/structural differences in the brain. Lou et al., 1984,
1989; Rapoport & Zemtkin, 1988. But the outcome for a person with ADHD
can be strongly influenced by environmental factors. Whalen and &
Henker, 1980.

So, could bottlefeeding cause ADHD (I'd love to see a cite for that
study)? No. Could it have a negative impact on the eventual outcome for
an individual with ADHD? It wouldn't surprise anyone on this list if
it did, would it? You all know the importance of bf relative to the
social/emotional development of a child.

Sorry to spout--meant only to lurk. But my son has ADD and, being a
lawyer, I've researched the disorder extensively. I feel quite strongly
that our bf relationship allowed me to deal with his ADD more
effectively, thus allowing for a more positive outcome relative to this
disorder.

Moral: If your clients have a family history of ADD/ADHD, you may have
another weapon in your arsenal (sorry for the war metaphor) to
encourage them to bf.
