Does anyone besides me remember when Dr. Jay Gordon taught this method for soothing colicy babies...years ago? I saw him on a morning news program, thought, "This could also work for newborns." and have implimented his suggestions ever since.

I Swaddle baby (with arms in flexed position), turn him to his right Side (to facilitate easier burping), Support baby's head in front and in back, Sway briskly with my knees (to provide cochlear stimulation...can also be done standing with baby braced against your hip), softly Shhh, Shhh, Shhh near baby's ear (mimicking familiar sounds for baby). Once calmed, if baby still desires to suck, I return him to breast.

One very frustrated family timed the whole process. It took 8 seconds to sooth a baby that had been passed from grandmother to aunt to friend, etc. without soothing. I especially like to get dads involved in soothing the baby to give Mom a few minutes respite. Happiness all around.

Kathy Bowers, RN, IBCLC (now in snowy Washington state)
