Traditionally and historically, breastfeeding is not a new experience for
African-American women.  Today however, statistics show that African-
American women, by far, breastfeed at an extremely disproportionate rate
than many other races.

I recently founded the African-American Breastfeeding Alliance (AABA.) Our
purpose is to:  raise the numbers of African-American women who breastfeed;
educate African-American women about the infant and maternal benefits of
breastfeeding; provide valuable resources about breastfeeding; and offer on-
going support to women who decide to breastfeed.  Currently, there are few
(if any) organizations that offer education and support to African-American
women about breastfeeding.  The need for this type of organization is great
because current programs and agencies are not meeting the needs of African-
American women at lower and middle class levels.  A major goal of AABA will
be research on the trends of African-American women and breastfeeding.
Another goal is to encourage more women to become IBCLC's because there are
too few African-American IBCLC's out there.
