Barbara writes,

"What duties and patients should be only my domain to see and not
someone CLC qualified? What is beyond her scope?"

Several things pop into my mind,

1. The IBLCE has created a National Registry of IBCLCs. One of the main
benefits is that the Registry protects the interest of babies and
mothers who seek out IBCLCs.

This Registry provides a state-by-state listing for U.S. Registered
Lactation Consultants (RLC)s (patent pending) who are currently
certified as an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC.) IBCLCs outside of the US are also listed.

The National Registry for IBCLCs is a service to the public, to
employers, and to coordinators and supervising individuals who wish to
determine if a provider is a current IBCLC.

The primary purpose of International Board Certification is to benefit
the public by setting standards for the lactation consultant profession.
and is designed to protect the interests of babies and mothers.

For more information about IBLCE, or the National Registry, please
contact the IBLCE Executive Director, Jo Anne Scott by telephone at
(703) 560-7332, or write to IBLCE, 7309 Arlington Blvd. Suite 300, Falls
Church, Virginia 22042-3215. Or at:
www.iblce.org

2. The IBLCE Code of Ethics states, (in part) the following:

"It is in the best interests of the profession of lactation consultants
and the public it serves that there be a Code of Ethics to
provide guidance to lactation consultants in their professional practice
and conduct. These ethical principles guide the profession
and outline commitments and obligations of the lactation consultant to
self, client, colleague, society, and the profession.

The purpose of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners
(IBLCE) is to assist in the protection of the health,
safety, and welfare of the public by establishing and enforcing
qualifications of certification and for issuing voluntary credentials
to individuals who have attained those qualifications. The IBLCE has
adopted this Code to apply to all individuals who hold the
credential of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC)."

3. The ILCA (International Lactation Consultant Association) publishes a
"Standards of Practice" The complete document can be ordered for $1 US.
