Hi everyone,
I have had a question from a ped about a newborn girl (bd 4/29/96) who is
being adopted.
The teen birth mom will be returning home to WVA from VA (where baby was
born), and this is an open adoption. Adopting mom is from Oregon and will
be returning home with baby sometime in near future. Adopting mom rented
(her mother & the birth mother actually came to get the pump!) an electric
pump from me last week after having used a manual pump for an unspecified
time. A. mom had already been in contact with LLL in her area & has reading
material and an SNS. The a. mom is 36 yo, g2p0, has stimulated a small
amount of milk, and is using the SNS to feed the baby. Baby & birth mom are
still in the hospital as of 4/30/96; I spoke with both by phone. Birth mom
is using hospital pump to provide colostrum (gets about 2 oz/pumping) and to
avoid severe engorgement & mastitis experienced by two of her aunts. She
wants to bf future babies & doesn't want to have a bad experience now. Both
moms are excited because the nurses are really interested in this
"event"--they can surely use the education.
Ped. is very concerned because a. mom, referring to abm as "dead food",
indicated a desire to use goat's milk + carrot juice as a supplementary
formula for the baby. In talking with the mom, I learned that she also
wants to know about milk banks in our area (VA/TN) & in her home (Bend, OR),
and what abm I would recommend as a supplement. She also said that her best
friend had a baby last week & she has discussed possible use of ebm from her
friend. I admitted to knowing nothing about the use of fresh or pasturized
goat's milk as a newborn supplement, and tried to weasel out of the abm
question by asking about known birth family allergies and what the ped.
suggested. The mom then said that she has been using soy-based abm to
lessen possibilities of allergy although there are no overt family
allergies, & that ped. really made no specific brand recommendation. (The
ped. is a nursing mom!) Mom also insightfully noted that ped. seemed upset
at use of goat's milk + carrot juice for a newborn.
So, to my questions. What does anyone know about use of goat's milk in a
situation like this & what milk banks are in the Bend, OR area? What
experience or suggestions do you have about donated ebm for an adopted baby?
I have only one client who used donated milk (She made arrangements with
some friends.), then goat's milk at 4 mo. because of severe allergies to cow
milk.
